SINGAPORE, APRIL 29, 2012: Opai Naufal capped a glorious day for Kartmaster Drakar at Round 1 of the Singapore Karting Championship by winning the Senior category.
The 23-year-old took the chequered flag of the 25-lap race at Kartright Speedway in 13:20.987, ahead of Thaddeus Lee who was just 1.196 secs behind.
“It’s a brilliant start to our season and I am delighted,” said Opai. “It was a good race and, once I had the lead from the first lap, I just maintained it and made sure I didn’t make any mistake.
“Having said that, I think I can still do better. And I will work on improving myself before the next round.”
His Kartmaster Drakar teammates in other categories fared well too with some podium finishes.
The team’s youngest driver, Josh Lee, 10, came in second in the Cadet category with a time of 10:03.979, behind winner Javier Chng, who clocked 9:49.398 in their 16-lap race.
Kartmaster Drakar’s Jon Lee,12, and Santos Bala, 15, also earned podium finishes in the Junior category, coming in second (14:01.791) and third place (14:10.209) respectively behind winner Amin Noorzilan (13:58.813).
Suriya Bala, 19, in his first competition since his return to karting, did not finish his race in the Senior category following a mechanical failure to his kart.
Kartmaster Drakar co-team principal Roland Chong is pleased with his
charges’ performances, but said there is more room for improvement.
“The boys did what I expected of them but we need to continue to work and strive for better times in the next race,” he said.
Kartmaster Drakar will race next in the Asian Karting Open Championship in Macau from June 30 to July 1.
